What You Need to Know About Your AC Compressor

There are many different parts that make up your air conditioning system, and you don’t need to know how they all work. However, there are a few vital parts of your air conditioner that it would benefit you to know. It’s important that you not only know about these parts, but be able to identify when they are having trouble. That will make it easier for you to call for repairs faster, preventing further damage to the system. Let’s take a look at one of those parts: the compressor.

What is the Compressor?

The Compressor is a gas pump that sits in the refrigerant line of your air conditioner. After the refrigerant has been evaporated in the evaporator coil, it moves into the compressor. The compressor puts pressure on the gas, heating it and propelling it down the refrigerant line to the condenser coil outside the house. The compressor coil keeps the refrigerant in the system moving, which means it’s vital for the operation of the system. It also keeps the operating rhythm of the air conditioner on track, as well. If a problem develops with the compressor, it will threaten the whole system.

Compressor Problems

Most of the time, a compressor problem happens when liquid refrigerant makes it into the part. The compressor is only designed to handle gas, so when it tries to compress the liquid the pressure created will break the part. This will immediately cause problems for the entire air conditioner, up to and including short cycling. If you have reason to suspect that your compressor is having issues, turn the system off and call for repairs as soon as possible. Otherwise, you may find yourself replacing the entire air conditioning system.
