What Qualifies as an Air Conditioning Emergency?

There are a myriad of different problems that can afflict an air conditioning system. Some of them are bigger than others, but all of them should be dealt with as quickly as possible. Even so, there are a handful of problems that can destroy the system if not fixed immediately. If you notice that your air conditioner is exhibiting symptoms of one of these problems, you should turn it off and call for emergency repairs. Let’s take a look at some of the symptoms of these problems that you should watch for.

Leaking

Refrigerant is the fluid that makes it possible for your air conditioner to siphon heat from inside your home and release it outside. A leak in the refrigerant line will drain the air conditioner of refrigerant, which will cause a cascade of problems eventually leading to a total system breakdown. If you notice fluid dripping or pooling around your air conditioner, it may be a refrigerant leak. Call for repairs as soon as possible.

Short-Cycling

When your air conditioner is turning itself on and off every couple of minutes, it’s called “short-cycling.” This kind of behavior can be provoked by a problem with the thermostat, or a faulty compressor. Short-cycling puts the system under an incredible amount of stress that it wasn’t designed to handle. If not fixed, it will make breakdowns more likely and decrease the overall lifespan of the system. Short-cycling is one of the worst possible problems that can happen to your air conditioner. If your air conditioner is rapidly turning itself on and off, you absolutely should call for repairs immediately.
