The Benefits of Installing a Ductless System This summer

If you’re in the market for a new air conditioning system, you have plenty of different options to choose from. Central air conditioning is always available, but before you go for the more obvious choice you should look at what some of the other systems have to offer. Let’s take a look at ductless air conditioning, and what it can do for you this summer.

What is a Ductless System?

A ductless system is, as you might have guessed, a climate control system that doesn’t use ducts. Instead of a central duct network, a ductless system makes use of a number of smaller air handlers installed in each room of the home. Each air handler has its own thermostat installed in the same room, which allows it to operate separately from the rest of the system. Up to four indoor air handlers can be connected to a single outdoor unit. Ductless systems are heat pumps, which means that they can reverse their refrigerant flows to act as either heating or cooling systems.

Benefits of a Ductless System

A ductless system offers all the benefits of other heat pump systems, including energy efficiency, and combustion-free heating. However, ductless systems also don’t have to worry about one of the biggest issues with central air conditioners: duct leaks. The US Department of Energy has estimated that the average forced air system loses as much as 30% of its total output to duct leaks. That’s nearly a third of the total output lost every time you turn on the system. With ductless air conditioning, you never have to worry about losing output to things like duct leaks. You can also set the ideal temperature for each room using the individual air handler thermostats, without affecting the rest of the home.
