Common Problems with Ductless Air Conditioning Systems

Ductless air conditioners are becoming more and more popular, especially now that we’re moving into the summer season. As great as they are for cooling your home, though, ductless air conditioners are just as susceptible to problems as any other system. While they share many common problems with traditional air conditioners, there are a few unique ones that you need to watch out for. Let’s take a look at some of the common problems with ductless air conditioning systems.

Leaks

Leaks are a common problem with air conditioners, either of the condensate or refrigerant variety. Leaks are a severe problem for air conditioners, especially refrigerant leaks. Leaking refrigerant will eventually deprive the system of the fluid it needs to operate. Condensate leaks, though, can be equally serious for ductless air conditioners. If a condensate leak happens at the point where the ductless unit meets the wall of the room, it can weaken that part of the wall. Over a long enough time, the wall can become weakened to the point where the unit will fall right off the wall.

Burned Out Air Handler Motor

This is another problem that is common to all kinds of air conditioners, but is a bit different for the ductless variety. Ductless air handlers are equipped with lubricated bearings, in order to decrease the amount of friction on the fan motor during operation. If the bearings wear down, as can sometimes happen, it will increase the friction on the motor until it burns itself out. Without an air handler motor, the ductless system cannot circulate air to cool the room. A key sign that this is about to happen is a grinding sound from the unit, which indicates that the bearings are wearing out.
