Common Air Conditioning Problems to Watch for

The weather is starting to heat up pretty quickly around here, which means people are going to start relying on their air conditioners more often to stay comfortable. More air conditioner use means more strain on the system, which means more problems cropping up as the year goes on. If you want to keep your air conditioner in the best possible shape, you should keep an eye out for some of the signs that the system is experiencing problems. Let’s go over those signs now.

Ice

The evaporator coil is the part of the air conditioner responsible for evaporating refrigerant to siphon heat from your home’s air. If the flow of air to the evaporator coil is cut off, the temperature around it will drop until it eventually freezes over. While frozen, the coil will not be able to draw thermal energy from the home’s air to cool it. The ice can also spread to other parts of the system and cause them to break down. Call for repairs if you see ice forming on your air conditioner.

Refrigerant Leaks

Your air conditioner doesn’t consume refrigerant during operation. Instead, it recycles the fluid back and forth to move heat from inside your home outside of it. If a leak develops in the refrigerant line, the system will slowly be drained of the fluid it desperately needs in order to work properly. This will cause a steady decline in output, followed by a full system breakdown. If you ever see fluids of any kind dripping from your air conditioner, you should call for repairs right away. It’s better to be safe than sorry, after all.
